Anglo American, one of the largest mining companies in South Africa, is committed to the communities in which they operate. At this year’s Mining Indaba, the world’s biggest mining investment event, Anglo American wanted to bring the spirit of ‘Real Mining. Real People. Real Difference.’ to life in their exhibition stand. Could this exhibition stand somehow make a real difference beyond the event? It started with an empty shipping container.

First it was transformed into an exhibition stand that was powered by an Anglo American platinum-based hydrogen fuel cell. Infographics and copy engaged delegates by telling the story of the stand’s future purpose. The stand was designed with a carefully selected set of communication touch points, to not only deliver key pivotal messages to different stakeholders at the Mining Indaba, but also to be used as relevant educational materials in the eventual library and classroom space.

As soon as the Mining Indaba came to a close, the entire stand was packed up and transported to Kroonstad. There, at Lovedale Primary School, our exact same exhibition stand opened its doors as a brand new school library and classroom. Powered by the same fuel cell, the library will serve the community for years to come. A Mining Indaba stand designed for our most precious resource: our children.

An alphabet of key mining terms was created for Lovedale. Primary Library to inspire and teach students about mining in a fun and engaging way.

The MINING FOR TOMORROW Alphabet was used throughout key touch points in the library space – from library lending cards to exterior signage and book dividers.
